People are bad at lots of things. Safety included. Priorities get crooked, and mostly folks just plain aren't educated in how to stay alive. Climbing is a shining example of the "safety third" mentality. The moral of the story is to get out there and find someone who can tell you how to do it all without getting hurt hurt or dying. Also, even if you've done it a thousand times, be careful. A fraction of a second of distraction is all too often fatal. Look at the big picture, and listen to your gut. If it looks icky, it's wrong.

Hatemachine guest post

Ok. Who's brilliant idea was this?  Here we have a dynamic rope clove hitched around two opposite and opposed non-lockers.  That's sort of like a traffic cop using a tank to pull over speeders - overkill AND ineffective.  When clove hitching with a dynamic rope, use ONE locker, no more no less.  Cloved ropes can twist and open gates on non-lockers when weighted (not a problem with thin cord).  Perhaps these folks were trying to prevent this issue by using the two non-lockers. This set up decreases the safety of the clove hitch - the hitch requires the surface area of one round biner to hold, with two it can slip... Don't show your mom, cause she'd be pissed.
